Simple Overview

Today, the most common type of watch is the wristwatch worn on the wrist and fastened with a watchband made of leather, nylon or other plastics (then called strap), metal links (called bracelet) or even ceramic. Before the inexpensive miniaturization that became possible in the 20th century, most watches were pocket watches, which had covers and were carried separately, often in a pocket and attached to a watch chain or fob.

In the 21st century, technological advances in metallurgy, composite materials development and physical vapor deposition greatly influence watch design and manufacturing. Solid stainless steel, titanium, tungsten carbide, carbon fiber, high-tech ceramic and ion plating processes dominate a considerable market share of today's modern watch-making industry. Sapphire crystals are often incorporated to complement and enhance the durability of a quality watch.

Most inexpensive and medium-priced watches used mainly for timekeeping are electronic watches with quartz movements. Expensive, collectible watches valued more for their workmanship and aesthetic appeal than for simple timekeeping often have purely mechanical movements and are powered by springs, even though mechanical movements are many times less accurate than quartz movements. The most accurate watches have radio-controlled movements that are miniaturized, portable versions of radio clocks.

4:20 pm : The major averages closed modestly higher Friday as some upbeat corporate news eventually helped investors look past mixed economic data.

With the Fed recently increasing its attention on raw material prices as the chief influence on inflation, the market's early focus was on the March PPI report. Core PPI in March checking in unchanged was initially comforting; but the soft number, coupled with rising food and energy costs, did not exactly signal that inflation is back under control.

Another report showing erosion in consumer sentiment and that one-year inflation expectations are at the highest level in eight months also sidelined the bulls in early action.

Be that as it may, investors gradually embraced leadership in two of the S&P 500's most heavily-weighted sectors -- Financials and Health Care. The latter got a huge boost from Merck (MRK 50.20 +3.84), which opened up 6% at a three-year high after upside Q1 and FY07 EPS guidance prompted an upgrade from Goldman Sachs. By far today's best performing Dow component (+8.3%), Merck accounted for more than half of the Dow's 59-point advance.

Financials garnered some early interest following reports that SLM Corp. (SLM 46.76 +6.01) could be taken private in a deal worth $30 bln, including debt. ABN AMRO (ABN 48.28 +2.49) confirming receipt of a joint letter from three potential acquirers late in the day gave the sector an added lift.

Sala de Exposições Temporárias do Museu Gulbenkian

A exposição “Cartier 1899-1949. O Percurso de um estilo” reúne um conjunto excepcional de 230 jóias, relógios e objectos pertencentes à Colecção Cartier, bem como algumas das aquisições de Calouste Gulbenkian, pertencentes à Fundação. São ainda expostos desenhos originais - alguns dos quais associados ao coleccionador -, moldagens e diversa documentação.

A Colecção Cartier tem sido exibida nos últimos anos nos mais prestigiados museus do mundo, de que se destaca, o Museu do Ermitage, São Petersburgo, o British Museum, Londres, o Metropolitan Museum of Art, Nova Iorque, o Museum of Fine Arts, Houston e o Museu de Xangai.

Organizada pelo Museu Calouste Gulbenkian em colaboração com a Colecção Cartier e a editora Skira, que publica o catálogo, esta iniciativa integra-se nas comemorações do 50º aniversário da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian.

Years ago, a powerful Irish mafia figure placed a small selection of his youngest, brightest men into the Massachusetts Police Academy as cadets. Their purpose is to eventually rise within the prestigious ranks of the city's police department, to serve as the eyes and ears of their boss. While somewhere else, a young cadet was assigned with an equally dangerous task: infiltrate the Irish syndicate headed by the man sending in his own to the Boston Police. Now, one cadet is an up and coming police official with a torn allegiance to his job and to the criminal mastermind that put him there. While the other cadet is the trusted number two of that man, only finding his professional duties are becoming blurred with his current state. But new clues have lead to unfortunate discoveries, when both sides realize they're being watched by the enemy. It's now all just a matter of time before the men assigned to find out whose the infiltrator, could come to a bloody end when someone's identity may be revealed.

In South Boston, the state police force is waging war on Irish-American organized crime. Young undercover cop Billy Costigan is assigned to infiltrate the mob syndicate run by gangland chief Frank Costello. While Billy quickly gains Costello's confidence, Colin Sullivan, a hardened young criminal who has infiltrated the police department as an informer for the syndicate, is rising to a position of power in the Special Investigation Unit. Each man becomes deeply consumed by his double life, gathering information about the plans and counter-plans of the operations he has penetrated. But when it becomes clear to both the mob and the police that there's a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin are suddenly in danger of being caught and exposed to the enemy-and each must race to uncover the identity of the other man in time to save himself. But is either willing to turn on the friends and comrades they've made during their long stints undercover?
